Data modelling

Power BI data modelling for one reliable version of the numbers

The data model is the part of Power BI nobody sees and everyone depends on. We build models that are accurate, fast and easy to extend.

The problem

Bad models produce confident, wrong numbers.

Many Power BI problems trace back to the model: tables imported as-is from exports, calculations duplicated in every report, and relationships that quietly double-count.

The result is slow reports and totals that do not reconcile with finance.

  • Totals that change depending on the filter
  • The same KPI calculated differently in different reports
  • Huge files and slow refreshes
  • Nobody understands how the numbers are produced
The solution

Clean, documented models built to last.

We shape your source data with Power Query, design a star-schema model, and build a library of DAX measures with agreed business definitions.

  • Power Query transformation and data cleansing
  • Star-schema design with fact and dimension tables
  • Date intelligence and calendar tables
  • Reusable DAX measure library
  • Shared semantic models for multiple reports
  • Model documentation and data dictionary
Benefits

Why the model matters.

Get the model right and every report built on it is easier, faster and more trustworthy.

Accurate figures

Totals reconcile with source systems and finance.

Faster reports

Well-designed models are smaller and quicker.

Define once, use everywhere

One measure library shared by every report.

Easier change

New reports and fields without starting again.

Transparency

Documented logic people can check and understand.

Scalability

A foundation ready for more data and more users.

Process

How the work runs.

Each stage ends with something you can see and sign off. Read more about how we work and our fixed-scope engagements.

01

Discover

We meet the people who use the reports, agree the decisions they need to make and audit the data you hold.

02

Model

We connect your sources, clean and shape the data, and build one model with agreed calculations.

03

Build

We design the reports in short review cycles, so you shape the result as it develops.

04

Adopt

We train your users, hand over documentation and set up refresh and access so it runs without us.

Example use cases

Common modelling projects.

Typical examples of what organisations ask us to build.

Combining several exports

Joining finance, CRM and operational exports into one model with shared dimensions.

Fixing an existing model

Reworking a slow or inaccurate model so existing reports perform and reconcile.

KPI definitions

Agreeing and implementing business definitions for revenue, margin, compliance or service levels.

Shared semantic model

One certified dataset feeding reports across several departments.

FAQ

Data modelling questions.

Anything else, ask us during your free Power BI review.

What is a star schema?

A model design with central fact tables, such as transactions or inspections, linked to dimension tables such as dates, sites or products. It is the recommended structure for Power BI because it is fast and easy to understand.

Do we need a data warehouse first?

Not usually. Many models can be built directly from your existing systems and files. We will tell you if your volumes or complexity justify a warehouse.

Can you fix our existing model?

Yes. We can review an existing model, explain what is causing slow performance or incorrect totals, and restructure it.

Will you document the DAX?

Yes. Every measure is named clearly and documented, with a data dictionary handed over at the end.
